Research in the Eberlin group focuses on applying novel mass spectrometry imaging technology to health related research. Our main goal is to develop innovative ambient mass spectrometry techniques and methodologies in combination with statistical and molecular biology tools to investigate the molecular information from a variety of biological samples. In particular, we are interested in using ambient mass spectrometry in creative ways to address critical problems in cancer research. Using ambient mass spectrometry, we investigate the metabolic profiles of tissues and other clinical specimens. We correlate the metabolic information obtained with molecular and clinical data to better understand and diagnose disease.

In basic cancer research, we are interested in studying tumor tissue behavior and chemically characterizing metabolic signatures of human cancers. We also pursue improvements in MS instrumentation in order to translate the tools developed in the laboratory to the clinic for in situ, real-time disease diagnosis. Our interdisciplinary research is carried out in collaboration with biologists, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists and statisticians to develop powerful approaches that can be used in real life scenarios such as in clinical practice. IR ion spectroscopy: a new dimension for tandem mass spectrometry (see J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2010, 132, 14766-14779)

Dr. Philippe Maître is Directeur de Recherche CNRS. He works at the Laboratoire de Chimie Physique at the Faculty of Sciences (Orsay) of the Université Paris Sud.

His current research strongly relies on the development of an analytical platform that integrates infrared spectroscopy and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS).

He has always been interested in deciphering reaction mechanisms, and ion trap based mass spectrometers are particularly well studied for manipulating transient species.  Performing ion spectroscopy provides structural information and thereby offers a new dimension to mass spectrometry.

His areas of interest includes organic, organometallic, and (bio-)inorganic chemistry.

Obteve seu Mestrado em Físico-Química pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp) em 2009 e concluiu seu doutorado em Ciências pela mesma Universidade no ano de 2010 com a defesa da tese intitulada NOVAS APLICAÇÕES DA ESPECTROMETRIA DE MASSAS EM QUÍMICA FORENSE. No mesmo ano, o Prof. Wanderson iniciou seu pós-doutoramento na Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo até o ano de 2012. O Dr. Wanderson Romão é docente do Instituto Federal do Espírito Santo e professor permanente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Química da UFES desde 2011. O docente tem realizado pesquisas nas linhas de Química Forense, Espectrometria de Massas, Petroleômica, e Materiais Poliméricos, com diversos projetos fomentados por órgãos como CNPQ, FAPES e CAPES. É revisor de mais de uma dezena de revistas científicas de alto fator de impacto, com mais de 115 artigos publicados em revistas internacionais, 4 capítulos de livros publicados, e mais de uma centena de trabalhos apresentados em congressos nacionais e internacionais. O Prof. Wanderson já orientou ou coorientou 15 dissertações de mestrado, 2 tese de doutorado e 2 supervisões de pós-doutoramento. São fatos que fizeram com que o Prof. Wanderson recebesse a Menção Honrosa em Reconhecimento às Contribuições ao desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Estado do Espírito Santo, prêmio concedido pelo Governo do Estado do Espírito Santo, bem como, o Prêmio Destaque forense de melhor artigo em Ciências Forenses no biênio 2014-2015 concedido pela Sociedade Brasileira de Ciências Forense.

Possui graduação em Quimica pela Universidade de São Paulo (1977), mestrado (1980) e doutorado (1986) em Bioquímica pela Faculdade de Medicina de Ribeirão Prêto- USP, pós-doutorado em Quimica Bio-Orgânica pelo Instituto SUNBOR em Osaka, Japão (1994-1996). Atualmente é Professor Titular em Analise Proteômica da Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, e pesquisador nível 1B do CNPq. Tem experiência na área de Bioquímica de Macromoléculas, Quimica de Proteínas e Peptídeos, além de Quimica de Produtos Naturais de origem animal; é especialista em espectromeria de massas de macromoléculas biológicas. Tem atuado no estudo da caracterização estrutural e funcional toxinas de venenos de Artrópodes peçonhentos, na analise metabolômica e proteômica de secreções glândulares de insetos, estudo da dinâmica estrutural de proteínas e peptídeos com tecnicas espectroscópicas. Atualmente é Editor de Quimica de Proteínas e Peptídeos do jornal AMINO ACIDS (Viena); é membro do corpo editorial do jornais: PEPTIDES, Amino Acids, Toxins Reviews e Open Journal of Spectroscopy, e Toxins Reviews.
